Have you ever felt like a fish out of water at networking events? You’re not alone!
Here are some ways I’ve managed to turn casual meet ups into long lasting connections.
1. Smile, you’re on camera!
Flash those pearly whites. It’s like a “let’s chat” sign on your face.
2. Small talk isn’t evil
“Hey! how are you!” Boom. Convo started.
3. Get ’em talking
Ask stuff they can’t answer with just “yes” or “no”. Ask them anything that keeps them talking.
4. Just listen
Let ’em spill the tea. People dig a good listener.
5. Find your tribe
“Oh, you hate pineapple on pizza too?” Instant buddies!
6. Pitch perfect
Have your spiel ready, but don’t be that guy who just keeps on talking about work.
7. Be a curious cat
Show genuine interest. Get to know them on a personal level.
8. Ask for their LinkedIn or contact info
Don’t be afraid to ask for their contact information at the end of your conversation.
At Networking Events everyone’s in the same boat. They want to meet people too!
Once at a Networking Event, I was standing with a group of people, and from nowhere came a lady saying: “Hey! I just wanted to come over and network with people. Can we exchange details?” She didn’t wait for the right moment to strike up a conversation with people. Her intention was clear. She was there for one reason, and one reason alone. And that was to connect with people and exchange contact information.
So don’t be afraid, everyone is there for a reason at these networking events.
